Father’s Day 2026
How can I (we) honor our father this year?
Father's Day can bring up a wide range of emotions. For some, it is a celebration. For others, it is a reminder of absence, loss, disappointment, gratitude, or unresolved feelings. Often, it is a mixture of many things at once.
FATHER’S DAY The third Sunday in June
Background: Father’s Day honors fathers and celebrates fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It is similar to Mother’s Day but has older ties. Father’s Day is connected to St. Joseph’s Day (early 1500s). There were several attempts to establish it as a holiday, including in 1911 by Jane Addams, an American Settlement activist, and in 1915 by Lions Club member Harry C. Meek.
When my father passed away in 1999, my brother observed that he wasn't necessarily a good father, but he was a good man. Over the years, many people shared stories with me about his kindness and generosity. Their experiences of him were sometimes different from my own.
His death was not unexpected, yet the learning that came from it has continued long after his passing. I've come to realize that we learn a great deal about life from the dying.
My father never cared much for Father's Day. He may even have disliked it. Yet when the first Father's Day arrived after he died, I was surprised by the depth of grief that surfaced.
This year, I don't know exactly what Father's Day will reveal for me. What I do know is that since it falls on the Summer Solstice, that feels extra meaningful to contemplate ahead of time.
Whatever your relationship with your father—or father figure—was or is, I invite you to sit with the question: “How can we honor our father this year?”

As far as answering the question, the Two of Fire assures us that we are headed in the right direction to heal any of our father issues with kindness and compassion.
